Intel Preparing to Drop 8 Core 16 Threaded Beast on Mainstream Platform

With the holiday season quickly approaching, we have heard numerous rumblings that the 9th gen CPUs hinted at since last year will be arriving soon and thanks to a recent report by Wccftech, we now have a pretty reliable rumor that Intel will launch the new 9th gen CPUs with the Z390 series at the start of October.

According to the article, the Intel Core i9-9900k will be an 8-core and 16-thread CPU while the Intel Core i7-9700K will be an 8 core part without hyper-threading, marking the first time ever on the desktop that Intel is releasing an i7 without hyper-threading. Following this, Intel will then release the Intel Core i5-9600K which will be very similar to the current Intel i5 8600K being a six-core part without hyper-threading.

Starting off with the top dog, the Intel Core i9-9900K will be their 8-core and 16-threaded monster, being the first mainstream desktop i9 part it has some big expectations to fill. It packs a rather large 16MB of L3 cache as well as Intel UHD 620 graphics for those who actually plan on using integrated graphics with a high-end part. The leaked specifications reveal that it will have a base clock of 3.6GHz and a boost clock of 5.0GHz in dual-core configurations. 4-core boost is rated at 4.8 GHz while 6/8 core boost is rated at 4.7 GHz. The chip also receives a 95w TDP rating, which is on par with Intel’s i7 parts.

As for the Intel Core i7-9700K it will pack 8-cores and 8-threads. Oddly, most of us were expecting something similar to the i7-8700K with a 6-core 12 thread part, though it’s unclear if the cores would be better than the threads or if performance will be similar. The i7-9700K will pack 12 MB of L3 cache and the same UHD 620 iGPU as the i9-9900K. It’ll also have the same 3.6GHz base clock and although boost clocks will reach a slightly lower 4.9GHz in single core, 4.8GHz in dual core, 4.7GHz in quad core and 4.6GHz in 6 to 8 core usage. The TDP is also 95W

The Intel Core i5-9600K is a 6-core part with 6-threads and 9 MB of L3 Cache, it remains very similar to the Core i5-8600K with base clock speeds of 3.7GHz base, 4.6GHz single core boost, 4.5GHz dual core boost, 4.4GHz quad core boost and 4.3 GHz in 6 core boost. Yet again it does so at a 95w TDP

Most interestingly is the rumored prices. The Intel Core i9-9900K is expected to be priced at a very high $450 USD, creating a new price bracket for the mainstream, with the i7-9700K hitting $350, and the i5-9600K hitting the familiar $250 price point. If these rumors hold true, it’ll be interesting to see how these chips perform and AMD’s response.
